William Golding house: Blue Plaque A

William Golding: 1911-1993 author and Nobel Literature Laureate lived in a house by The Green in Marlborough.

"Our house was on The Green, that close-like square, tilted south"

The first plaque (A) along the Blue Plaque Walk commemorates William Golding. Probably best known as the author of "Lord of the Flies" published in 1954, he was awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983 as well as the coveted Booker Prize in 1980, and was knighted by the Queen in 1988.

William Gerald Golding was born in Cornwall on 19 September 1911 and went to Marlborough Grammar School from 1921 to 1930, where his father Alec was science master.

Turning left out of Patten Alley, which runs alongside St Mary's Church, the Blue Plaque can be seen on the wall of first house, No29, which was the boyhood home of William Golding.


A list of owners since 1502 is in the porch of the house.
